The subject of Applied Arts covers a range of crafts, including predominantly Metalwork and Ceramics, but also other forms of sculpture, jewellery making and craftwork.
I began by generating inspiration using a 'window', cutting out a small rectangle in a sheet of paper provided my with a viewfinder, so that i could look at sections of objects and create line drawings and sketches from which to draw inspiration from. I chose a difficult cog piece and some organic looking plants which created some interesting forms.
For the metalwork exploratory stage we experimented with a range of methods of metal manipulation. Here are some of the products of my experimentation:
WOODEN CUBE PROJECT
My favourite process in metalwork would have to be acid etching - especially the blow torching afterwards which produces such beautiful colours on the exposed steel. I rubbed graphite into the grain of the wood and then lightly burnt it to give a nice background to the vibrant colours of the etchings and the copper. For me this was a very enjoyable project aside from the sore hands from hammering and sharp pieces of metal.
NORA FOK is an artist who is influenced by nature, systems and order; she translates these ideas into intricate, delicate pieces made entirely by hand requiring many hours of work. She creates these pieces by handknitting nylon microfilament, I think the detail and delicacy of these wearable artworks makes them so unique and beautiful.
